Useful Japanese Expressions 
to help you during your trip 

1. Basic Phrases

  • Hello / Good day: こんにちは (Konnichiwa)
  • Good morning: おはようございます (Ohayou gozaimasu)
  • Good evening: こんばんは (Konbanwa)
  • Thank you: ありがとうございます (Arigatou gozaimasu)
  • Excuse me / Sorry: すみません (Sumimasen)
  • Yes: はい (Hai)
  • No: いいえ (Iie)
  • Please: お願いします (Onegaishimasu)
  • Goodbye: さようなら (Sayounara) 

2. Transportation

  • Where is [the train station]?
    [駅]はどこですか？ ([Eki] wa doko desu ka?)
    Example: 東京駅はどこですか？ (Toukyou eki wa doko desu ka?)
    (Where is Tokyo Station?)
  • How much is a ticket to [location]?
    [場所]までの切符はいくらですか？ ([Basho] made no kippu wa ikura desu ka?)
    Example: 京都までの切符はいくらですか？ (Kyouto made no kippu wa ikura desu ka?)
    (How much is a ticket to Kyoto?)

3. Shopping

  • How much is this?
    これはいくらですか？ (Kore wa ikura desu ka?)
  • Do you have this in a different size?
    別のサイズはありますか？ (Betsu no saizu wa arimasu ka?)
  • Can I try this on?
    試着できますか？ (Shichaku dekimasu ka?)
  • I’ll take this.
    これをください (Kore o kudasai.)
  • Do you accept credit cards?
    クレジットカードは使えますか？ (Kurejitto kaado wa tsukaemasu ka?)

4. Dining

  • A table for [number of people], please.
    [人数]人です。 ([Ninzuu] nin desu.)
    Example: 二人です。 (Futari desu.) (Two people, please.)
  • Can I have the menu, please?
    メニューをお願いします。 (Menyu o onegaishimasu.)
  • What do you recommend?
    おすすめは何ですか？ (Osusume wa nan desu ka?)
  • No [specific ingredient], please.
    [材料]は抜きでお願いします。 ([Zairyou] wa nuki de onegaishimasu.)
    Example: 肉は抜きでお願いします。 (Niku wa nuki de onegaishimasu.) (No meat, please.)
  • Check, please.
    お会計をお願いします。 (Okaikei o onegaishimasu.) 

5. Polite Expressions

  • I don’t understand Japanese.
    日本語が分かりません。 (Nihongo ga wakarimasen.)
  • Can you speak English?
    英語を話せますか？ (Eigo o hanasemasu ka?)
  • Please speak slowly.
    ゆっくり話してください。 (Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.)
  • Thank you for your help.
    助かりました、ありがとうございます。 (Tasukarimashita, arigatou gozaimasu.)  

6. Sightseeing

  • Where is [tourist spot]?
    [観光地]はどこですか？ ([Kankouchi] wa doko desu ka?)
    Example: 浅草寺はどこですか？ (Sensouji wa doko desu ka?) (Where is Sensoji Temple?)
  • Can you take a picture for me?
    写真を撮ってもらえますか？ (Shashin o totte moraemasu ka?)
  • What time does it open/close?
    何時に開いて/閉まりますか？ (Nanji ni aite/shimarimasu ka?) 

7. Emergency

  • Help!: 助けて！(Tasukete!)
  • I’m lost.: 道に迷いました。 (Michi ni mayoimashita.)
  • Where is the police station?: 警察署はどこですか？ (Keisatsu-sho wa doko desu ka?)
  • Where is the hospital?: 病院はどこですか？ (Byouin wa doko desu ka?)
  • I don’t feel well.: 具合が悪いです。 (Guai ga warui desu.)
